Hal Guitar

Is it necessary to play both chords and notes during songs when learning Hal Leonard guitar method?
In the beginning of book 1 there are notes and sometimes chords above the notes. will it help me improve to learn to play all of the notes as well as any chords shown during the songs? never thought it could be so difficult. reading music, hitting right notes and switching between chords and notes. man o man how how long is it gonna take? my head is starting to ache! haha thx
The idea is that they are supposed to be played separately. If you are by yourself you should practice playing the notes by themselves and then on the next time you play the song, practice the chords by themselves. If you are playing with somebody else, a teacher for example, then get them to play the chords or the notes and you play the other part.
