New to music compisition… How interface an electric guitar with a computer?
My little brother has been playing guitar for a couple of years and wanted him to compose his own music on the computer. Before i spend money on studio time for him i wanted to bridge the gap. What software and hardware is needed for him to compose music directly from his guitar to the computer in midi for example.
Converting guitar sounds directly into midi is costly and rather frustrating, as there aren’t any really good guitar to midi converters.
My recommendation is to actually record the sound of the guitar. To record guitars and generally make guitar-based music, you’ll need both hardware and software.
For hardware, you need a sound-card developed especially for musicians. Sometimes these are called “Audio Interfaces”. I like USB-based solutions. Here’s a link to a major retailer of these sorts of things, which includes customer reviews.
For software, the range is very broad, from freeware that might not work quite right, to professional software costing over $1000. The term for what you are looking for is a DAW, and some popular ones for home use are Ableton Live, FL Studio, Apple Logic, Sonar XL, and Cubase.
One thing to keep in mind is that often the hardware audio interfaces will come with demo versions of DAW software, which might be good enough to get started making music. After your first big hit you’ll definitely be able to buy more professional software!

If you relax the restriction of composing directly from the guitar, there are lots of good midi composers for free on the internet – however, these generally won’t produce great sonic results.
